Our Level 3 CCI online preparation course is the perfect entry point into the public service interpreting profession and does not assume any prior knowledge. However, gaining some basic understanding of the role of a public service interpreter before starting will be beneficial.

The webinar-based course is not a qualification in itself; it covers the knowledge and skills required to pass the Level 3 CCI online exam if and when the learner decides to take it. It is made up of seven webinars (one for each unit):

  • Unit/webinar 1: Working as an interpreter in public services
  • Unit/webinar 2: Preparing for interpreting assignments
  • Unit/webinar 3: Planning to work as a community interpreter in medical settings
  • Unit/webinar 4: Planning to work as a community interpreter in the welfare benefits system
  • Unit/webinar 5: Two-way interpreting
  • Unit/webinar 6: Performing a sight translation
  • Unit/webinar 7: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Interpreters

Learners are given exercises to complete in between each session.

Online exam format and content

Our online exam is taken in the learner’s chosen language combination and focuses on one of the qualification specialisms (eg mental health). It is conducted via video conferencing software and is in two parts:

  • Part 1: Interpret consecutively to and from English in a public service context.
  • Part 2: Provide a sight translation from English in a public service context.

Revision for the exam should include practising vocabulary and terminology relating to public service specialisms and studying industry standards such as the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) Code of Conduct and expectations of the role. Interpreting practise with a friend or family member will maximise the chance of passing.

Those taking the online exam are responsible for ensuring that they have a working webcam, speakers, microphone and strong internet connection, and that the videoconferencing software and devices are working, so that all parties involved can easily see and hear each other. Online learners must also provide photo identification before the exam begins, verify that they are alone, and declare any materials such as a dictionary or glossary that they intend to use.

Once payment and booking are confirmed, a learner handbook will be provided with further information about the specialism and exam content. Learners will be asked to select three preferred dates/time slots for taking the exam.
