The Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting (CCI), regulated by Ofqual, is nationally recognised as the entry level standard for paid public service interpreting work in the following specialisms:

  • Health
  • Mental Health
  • Social Services
  • Welfare Benefits
  • Education
  • Housing
  • Immigration (restricted assignments only)

It is suitable for bilingual/multilingual people who speak English and another language fluently and already have existing interpreting experience (which can include voluntary work for charities) and/or have completed relevant preparatory training.

Our innovative online Level 3 CCI can be taken as a videoconference-based exam-only qualification, or as a discounted bundle with our webinar-based preparation course. The exam-only qualification is designed to demonstrate the learner’s competence as an interpreter as opposed to learning new skills or knowledge. Prior training, experience, preparation and revision is therefore highly recommended before booking the exam. The preparation course prepares learners for undertaking the exam.

Applicants must be computer literate, have access to a computer with good internet connection.

For those with no prior experience or training, we also offer the classroom-based Ascentis Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting, which is a combined learning and assessment qualification.

Exam format and content

Our online exam is taken in the learner’s chosen language combination and focuses on one of the qualification specialisms (eg mental health). It is conducted via video conferencing software and is in two parts:

  • Part 1: Interpret consecutively to and from English in a public service context.
  • Part 2: Provide a sight translation from English in a public service context.

Preparing for the exam

Revision for the exam should include practising vocabulary and terminology relating to public service specialisms and studying industry standards such as the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) Code of Conduct and expectations of the role. Interpreting practise with a friend or family member will maximise the chance of passing.

Those taking the online exam are responsible for ensuring that they have a working webcam, speakers, microphone and strong internet connection, and that the videoconferencing software and devices are working, so that all parties involved can easily see and hear each other. Online learners must also provide photo identification before the exam begins, verify that they are alone, and declare any materials such as a dictionary or glossary that they intend to use.
